Here’s a summary of the updates that may be of interest to this thread.

1) Given recent concerns related to homebrewing operation in Surprise, Arizona, I’ve provided some additional content in the chapter on Zoning. The content came directly from this thread, and Eric is cited accordingly. By including a link to this thread in the manual, I'm hoping it will encourage dialog with the broader homebrew community.

2) In response to the incident in Surprise, Arizona, safety concerns previously dispersed throughout the manual are now compiled into a single chapter. Please note that there may be additional considerations regarding safety not documented in the manual.

Suggestions for future revisions are welcome and may be forwarded to my personal email at: thegreenbeat@yahoo.com. Note that my disclaimer applies to all revisions.

Regards –

Hans HuthAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13496051364629119155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541833700232128587.post-40256199132325437802008-08-30T20:58:00.000-07:002008-08-30T20:58:00.000-07:00First, thank you Eric for initiating this valuable...First, thank you Eric for initiating this valuable thread. Regarding what’s reasonable in the context of volumes produced by individuals, it makes sense to understand the risks associated this activity, and how these risks can be mitigated by taking appropriate safety measures.

Along those lines, I'm revisiting the “Biodiesel 101” manual referenced in this thread in order to identify any potential shortcomings or improvements regarding safety. Sections of the manual which reference safety explicitly include:

Zoning Issues – p 15 (see last two paragraphs in section on page 17)
Fire Codes – p 17
Top 10 List – p 168
Appendix – p 205

So, where can the manual be improved with respect to safety? Well, we know, the fire in Surprise was initiated by the combustion of an oily rag which was not disposed of properly. Although one of the MSDS sheet I’ve included in the appendix (p 205) references the dangers oily rags (p 277), I have not addressed this risk in the main body of the text. There may be other considerations that could benefit from added focus.

Where can DBI help? For those of you who homebrew or who are educated in this activity - would you please consider taking a look at the manual and sending me any comments, suggestions, recommendations, and/or learning experience you may have regarding safety? Perhaps you have a story of a close call you’d be willing to share so that others can learn from our collective experience. Of course, I’d be happy to keep your comments and/or recommendations anonymous. If you wish to contribute anonymously, you may do so by emailing me at : thegreenbeat@yahoo.com .

Respective comments and improvements will be reflected in the next revision I hope to have released within the next two weeks.

Thanks in advance to DBI and the homebrew community for your help.

HansAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13496051364629119155noreply@blogger.com
